Swimmer Cleiton Munguambe broke records in the 1,500 and 800 metres freestyle events in the first two days of the National Swimming Championship taking place since Wednesday in the Zimpeto Olympic pool.
The 13-year-old ‘Tubarões’ athlete was overwhelming in his first two races, posting a time of 18 minutes, 14 seconds and 85 hundredths in the 1,500 meters, bettering his previous record of 18 minutes, 33 seconds and 11 hundredths. In the 800 metres, also freestyle, the athlete posted 9 minutes, 31 seconds and 4 hundredths.
The times are encouraging for a swimmer already thinking about upcoming competitions.
“The Championship is going very well, despite having few participants. I am happy with the results and I hope to continue to have good results in the next few rounds, so that my parents realise that they are not making an investment in vain,” Cleiton said.
Domingas Munhemeze, from Clube Naval, also thrives in the water. Although she did not break any records, she took first place in the first two races – the 1,500 and 800 metres.
“I started the race very well. It is true that I was unable to set a record, but the results have encouraged me to work harder, because I still have many competitions ahead,” the 18-year-old swimmer said of her plans for future events.
“My goal is to work to improve my times, but I’m thinking about the next Olympic Games,” she did admit.
National Swimming involves just six clubs: Tubarões, Naval, Ferroviário, Golfinhos, Academia Marlins and Clube de Natação de Zimpeto, all based in Maputo city.
