The Manhiça Research and Health Centre (CISM) in Maputo province, southern Mozambique, is to study the effectiveness of a tuberculosis vaccine in the fight against Covid-19, the entity announced this Friday.
The coordinator of the Research Area for Acute Respiratory Infections at CISM, Nelson Tembe, told Radio Mozambique that the research, to be carried out on health professionals, will start next month.
“This study will be carried out among health professionals, and we will see if the vaccine reduces the incidence of the disease. These studies test the hypothesis that the vaccine may have a positive effect. It is a vaccine against tuberculosis, yes, but the results that have emerged indicate that there is a possibility that this vaccine could have a positive effect in the fight against Covid-19,” Tembe said.
The CISM has laid all the groundwork for the start of the study in October, and now awaits only the necessary authorisation by the competent authorities.
