The Christian Council of Mozambique (CCM) and the Community of Sant’Egidio yesterday expressed their deep concern over the action of insurgents who have been carrying out attacks in the northern province of Cabo Delgado.
Speaking yesterday in Maputo during a meeting with President of the Assembly of the Republic Veronica Macamo, CCM chairperson Felicidade Chirinda said that the attacks in Cabo Delgado were tearing at the social fabric of Mozambican families.
Quoted in an AR press release, Chirinda also complained about the proliferation of religious congregations in the country, many of them “with dubious ideologies”.
Chiara Turrini, a senior member of the Community of Sant’Egidio, spoke about the organisation’s ongoing activities under the DREAM health care programme developed by the Roman Catholic humanitarian NGO, which focuses on women and children with HIV and AIDS. The DREAM programme also works in the fight against and prevention of cancers.
Macamo praised the CCM and Community of Sant’Egidio’s contributions to the development of the country. She noted that there was a need to legalise religious denominations in Mozambique, “examining their ideologies”.
The CCM brings together at least 24 evangelical churches and two associations. Currently, more than 700 religious denominations are registered with the Mozambican Ministry of Justice, Constitutional Affairs and Religious Affairs.
Macamo also thanked the Community of Sant’Egidio “for the consolidation and deepening of democracy”, in addition to its work in the health sector.
