Four people have died of cholera in Chilaulene recently, victims of a new outbreak of the disease in that part of Gaza province.
The outbreak began after poorly preserved meat was eaten, resulting in diarrhoea and vomiting. Testing revealed the presence of the cholera virus.
Data concerning the last 24 hours indicate that the province now has a cumulative total of 36 cases. According to Chief Physician Sérgio João Reinaldo, of these, four were discharged over this period, during which time no deaths were registered. Reinaldo said that another case reported to the health unit was being followed up.
Reinaldo also made it known that the sector was redoubling efforts for the treatment and prevention of the disease. A treatment centre has already been set up to receive, treat and isolate all patients who show symptoms of cholera.
“Conditions have been created to address the outbreak,” Reinaldo said, going on to appeal to the public to redouble their efforts to reverse the scenario.
