Chiquinho Conde has been in Maputo since last Sunday (04-08), arriving from Portugal, where he had been since the Mambas’ victory over Guinea Conakry (1-0) on 10 June, in a match played in Morocco and counting towards the fourth round of Group G of the African qualifying zone for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States of America, Mexico and Canada.
Chiquinho Conde remained in Portugal after that match to deal with family issues, particularly related to his daughter’s health.
The coach’s return to Maputo is aimed at concluding negotiations with the Mozambican Football Federation (FMF) over the renewal of his contract as national coach.
The coach’s contract officially expired on Wednesday, July 31, the FMF on June 27 having already announced that it was interested in renewing Conde’s contract.
Since then, over various rounds of negotiations via Zoom, the parties have not been able to reach a consensus.
However, Desafio is in a position to confirm that last week the FMF negotiating team, made up of Jorge Bambo and António Chambal, respectively Vice-President of Administration and Finance and Advisor to the Board, made concessions on some of the coach’s demands, while also abandoning some of the clauses that had been put forward as part of the new contract.
