A Chinese citizen named Lin Jian Guingouan has been sentenced to 18 years in prison and the payment of two million meticais in compensation for his involvement in a kidnapping.
Lin was one of a group of four persons accused of kidnapping, possession of prohibited weapons and use of false documents.
One person, also of Chinese nationality, was acquitted, while another member of the group is said to be on the run.
In addition to the Chinese citizen, the Judicial Court of Sofala Province sentenced two Mozambicans, identified as Manuel Fernando and Filipe Mugovolas and at the time of the events working as security guards, to eight years in prison.
At issue is the kidnapping of a Chinese citizen in the city of Beira, the provincial capital of Sofala, in May 2021.
According to the panel of judges of the 6th Criminal Section of the Judicial Court of Sofala Province, led by Judge Martinho Muchiguere, Lin Jian Guingouan confessed to having committed the crime freely and knowingly, in order to repay a debt of 20 million meticais he had contracted at the Marina Casino.
