Mozambican Defence Minister Salvador Mtumuke and the Chinese ambassador Siu Jian signed a military cooperation agreement on assistance to the Mozambican Defence Forces (FADM) in Maputo on Monday.
China will be providing technical assistance, including training, and supply of equipment and accessories, among others, worth about US$11.5 million.
Minister Mtumuke explained that the document “advocates the building and equipping of the Protection Regiment and strengthens the bonds of friendship and fraternity between the armed forces of our two countries”.
The Chinese diplomat said that the agreement was an integral part of China’s global cooperation strategy, which included helping Mozambique defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
According to the ambassador, the agreement “is also intended to strengthen the military capacity of the Mozambican Armed Forces to ensure national sovereignty and strengthen its mandate in peacekeeping missions”.
The event was preceded by the accreditation of the new Chinese military attache to Mozambique, Colonel Chang Xiang.
