Mayor João Ferreira, eight councillors and two advisers to Chimoio Municipal Council will voluntarily donate half of their wages until June for the purchase of spray pumps, masks, gloves and chlorine. The decision was announced this Friday (10.04).
“We noted that there was a shortage of some spraying products, a situation we could not let pass,” Mayor Ferreira told Lusa about the collective decision.
The city, close to the border with Zimbabwe and crossed by the main road corridor that connects the Indian Ocean port of Beira to the African countries of the hinterland – all with registered positive cases – hopes the initiative will raise more than 400,000 meticais (almost €5,500).
“We must make sure that the negative impact is minimal” if the disease reaches the city, João Ferreira stressed.
Chimoio municipality last week launched a spraying campaign at the main entrances to the city, covering all vehicles, including motorcycles and bicycles, and obliging all public transport users, workers and passengers alike, to perform the mandatory hand washing.
Health authorities in Manica indicate that 1,200 people, mostly Mozambican truck drivers from Zimbabwe and miners from South Africa, are currently undergoing home quarantine in Manica province.
Country-wide, the number of coronavirus infections has risen to 21.
