Mozambique: Chimoio and Gondola hit by water shortages after main bursts

Twelve of the 33 neighbourhoods of Chimoio city and the entire town of Gondola in Manica province have not had running water since the early hours of this Tuesday (13-12), following the rupture of the 500 mm water main carrying water from the Barrio 4 distribution centre to Soalpo and Gondola.

The failure happened next to the Macababa police station in Chimoio’s 7 de Abril neighbourhood, and is affecting the Bairro 4, Bairro 5, Francisco Manyanga, 7 de Abril, Soalpo, Nhauriri, Mudzingazi, Nhamaonha, Josina Machel and 16 de Junho neighbourhoods, and all those of Gondola municipality.

FIPAG spokeswoman Cristina Monteiro said that a maintenance team had already been mobilised and was on site attending to the fault.

Lack of water and low pressure in about 12 neighbourhoods in Chimoio and the village of Gondola were the immediate consequences of the malfunction, Monteiro said, adding reassurances that efforts towards an urgent solution of the problem were being made.
