Dozens of people on Monday invaded and destroyed facilities in the Chimanimani National Reserve in Manica province.
The group of ‘garimpeiros'[illegal miners} intending to free two other illegal miners detained two days ago in the park, claims that the wealth, especially the gold exploited there, only benefits figures linked to power.
Speaking to VOA, Sussundenga district administrator Tomás Razão, who confirmed the incident, explained that the garimpeiros’ rebellion was caused by the actions of park rangers, and the authorities are now investigating whether there were excesses.
Sociologist Abílio Mandlate says that the model for exploiting natural resources in Mozambique is not inclusive, which generates dissatisfaction surrounding resources extracted from the land.
