A court in the central Mozambican city of Chimoio can find no crime in a piece of satire, acted by six year old children, and aimed against corruption in the traffic police.
Since children cannot be accused of crimes, the Chimoio attorney’s office took aim at the adult who produced the play, Denilson Daniel, the uncle of the main child actor, Valter Danone. The prosecution claimed that Daniel had exposed the children to risk.

Initially, in June last year, the charge was that of defaming the traffic police. But corruption and extortion in the traffic police is notorious, and the public outcry was such that the prosecution dropped this charge.
Instead, it claimed that the child actors were in danger, because one of the props in the play was a moving car. The court was obliged to call on the assistance of experts in videos, who said there was no merit in the prosecution’s arguments.
On Tuesday, the Chimoio judge, Lucio Julio, threw the case out. The evidence before the court, he said, did not show that any crime had been committed, and so he had no choice but to acquit Denilson Daniel.
