Mozambique: Child found dead inside broken freezer in Xai-Xai

A nine-year-old boy has been found dead in a disused freezer in Macanwine, in Xai-Xai municipality. The circumstances surrounding the death remain unclear, with police promising to make a statement soon.

The nine-year-old boy was found dead this Wednesday inside a broken freezer at his father’s home in the Macanwine neighbourhood, Praia de Xai-Xai administrative post, Gaza province.

“Yesterday, at around 8:00 p.m., I was called by the block chief to tell me that there was a dead body in the freezer. As soon as I got here, I saw that the body was in the freezer, so I immediately called Sernic and the police. When the police showed up, we saw that the child really was dead,” one resident reported.

The body of the minor was discovered in an advanced state of decomposition four days after his disappearance. The crime shocked residents of Macanwine, who are raising concerns about the possible involvement of people close to the boy.

“Let the justice system do its job to investigate and find out how the child’s death happened,” one resident told O País.

“We don’t know for sure. So, perhaps the expert analysis carried out by the authorities will determine the truth, the veracity of the facts. Because the child found in the freezer had blood [on him], so that’s a bit suspicious,” said another resident, who revealed that recurring arguments between the child’s mother and grandmother had even reached the courthouse.

Sernic and forensic officers have been investigating the scene, and the police say they will make a statement shortly.
