The city of Nampula has recently seen a galloping rise in the price of charcoal, one of the fuels most widely used by families living in the city, and which has now reached a price of 650 meticais per 50-kilogram bag, compared to the previous 350 meticais.
According to research at points of sale by Wamphula Fax, these prices are due to the adjustment of freight prices by the owners of vehicles transporting this product, in turn reflecting the advanced state of degradation and even closure of access roads to the producing districts since the province was hit by Severe Storm Jude.
Nampula residents approached by our reporters say that the rise in the price is suffocating them financially, Muahivire resident Anabela Mauro telling us that last week she spent three days searching for charcoal to buy, to no avail.
“Surprisingly, when the product arrived, it cost between 550 and 650 meticais. I was surprised, because I didn’t expect that,” Mauro said.
