Mozambique Elections: Greater Maputo region calm and without public transport

President of the Republic Daniel Chapo has reiterated his commitment to Mozambican culture and will announce a Secretary of State for Arts and Culture soon.
“We have to appoint someone who breathes culture, who understands culture and who identifies with you,” Daniel Chapo said during a meeting with artistic and cultural organizations and associations this Tuesday. Headed by the Mozambican Association of Authors (SOMAS), the proved an opportunity for open and relaxed dialogue about the future of cultural industries in Mozambique.
The associations present included the Mozambican Association of Fashion Designers, the Mozambican Theatre Association, the Mozambican Gospel Association, the Mozambican Musicians Association, the National Association of Artisans, the Maputo Musicians Association, the Mozambican Disc Jockey Association, the Mozambican Society of Authors and the Federation of Cultural Associations.
The group reiterated their willingness to cooperate with the government in strengthening and promoting national culture.
During the interaction, representatives of the cultural associations raised several concerns, from the digitalization of cultural content to the protection of authors’ rights. Chapo gave assurances that these issues would be treated seriously and that the government was committed to working side by side with the artists.
“Digitalization is a challenge for us and we will have to work on it, both for the public and private sectors,” President Chapo stressed.
The President demonstrated sensitivity to the challenges presented by artists and emphasized the importance of preserving Mozambican culture, encouraging the promotion and appreciation of the arts in the country.
The Head of State also stressed that cultural industries deserve appropriate treatment and that cultural diversity should be an element of unity and development.
The meeting was attended by the Minister of Education and Culture, Samaria dos Anjos Tovela, who closely followed the discussions and reinforced the government’s commitment to creating conditions for the growth of the sector.
To ensure greater attention to cultural issues, the President of the Republic announced the appointment of a Secretary of State for Arts and Culture, highlighting the importance of a manager who understands the difficulties and needs of the sector.
The Mozambican Association of Authors reiterated its role in defending the rights of authors and in the collective management of these rights to ensure greater protection and efficiency in the remuneration of artists. With established relations at both national and international level, through agreements with CISAC, OMP and UNESCO, the organization affirmed its commitment to contribute to solving the challenges facing the sector. “We cannot be here as a problem. We want to be part of the solution,” stressed the organization’s Secretary General, José Manuel Luís.
The meeting reinforced the need for solid collaboration between the government and artists, with the aim of creating an environment conducive to the development of cultural industries.
The President of the Republic promised that there would be further meetings to discuss concrete solutions and promote initiatives that boost the sector, strengthening Mozambican identity and culture.
