Mozambican President Daniel Chapo on Saturday made a vigorous appeal to protect human life, in the face of cyclones and other extreme climatic events.
He was speaking during a visit to the Entente accommodation centre, in Mozambique Island district, in the northern province of Nampula, where households driven from their homes by cyclone Jude have taken shelter.
There are about 400 households in Entente, all of them rescued from Sangane village which was submerged by the flood waters brought by Jude early last week. About 100,000 people were affected by the cyclone, and the known death toll stands at at 14.
“I am here because Nampula was the province that suffered most from the cyclone, and so I came to show my solidarity”, said Chapo.
He stressed that the country’s relief agency, the National Disaster Management Institute (INGD), through the local disaster management committees, had kept the death toll to a minimum.
In addition to the accommodation centre, Chapo also visited the key roads that had been cut by Jude. Much of Nampula province remains inaccessible, and it is feared that the death toll may rise, as the authorities reach remote areas.
Chapo visited the damaged 200 metre long bridge over the Monapo river in Meconta district, which is a crucial link in the country’s main north-south highway (EN1). A second key bridge on EN1, over the Mecuburi river, is also damaged.
Chapo said that contractors have been mobilised to make the necessary repairs. “I thought I should come here to see the damage for myself”, said the President. “The damage to the roads is enormous”.
