The Mozambican president, Daniel Chapo, today challenged the new ministers appointed on Tuesday to face, with “boldness and courage,” the “crucial moment” that the country is going through, defending political stability as a priority.
“Mozambique is experiencing a crucial moment in its history and our government is determined to work and face adversity with courage and boldness and to transform opportunities into progress for our people,” President Daniel Chapo said during the inauguration of six new ministers at the Presidency of the Republic in Maputo.
Since October 21, Mozambique has been experiencing a climate of social unrest, with protests and strikes called by former presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane. Violent clashes between the police and demonstrators have resulted in at least 315 deaths, including those of around two dozen minors, and around 750 people suffering gunshot wounds, according to the electoral platform Decide, a non-governmental organization which monitors electoral processes.
For the Mozambican head of state, political stabilization must be the priority, as well as the creation of conditions for a “favourable environment”.
“We know that true peace requires a constant commitment to ensure political stability and harmony,” the new head of state added.
Daniel Chapo also challenged the new executive to undertake the structural change that the country needs, as a way of “delivering to the people” a product adjusted to the current major social, political and economic demands.
“The economy of Mozambique is the backbone of our development, which must be reflected in our people. Despite the challenges imposed by global crises and internal adversities, the potential of our country remains virgin, unshakable and very promising,” he added.
The six ministers sworn in today join the rest of the government already in office, led by Prime Minister Maria Benvinda Levi and 12 other ministers.
The new group is made up of Nyelete Brooke Mondlane, Minister of Combatants and Minister of Gender, Children and Social Action in the previous government; Samaria dos Anjos Filemon Tovela, Minister of Education and Culture, Ivete Ângela dos Anjos Ferrão Alane, Minister of Labor, Gender and Social Action, Ricardo Sengo, Minister in the Presidency for Affairs of the Civil House; Fernando Rafael, Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources; and Caifadine Manasse, Minister of Youth and Sports.
A Minister of Justice, Constitutional and Religious Affairs is yet to be appointed.
