The President of the Republic, Daniel Chapo, expressed appreciation for the quality of education offered by the Aga Khan Academy, during a visit to that institution in the city of Matola, and called for the expansion of similar initiatives in other regions of the country.
The visit took place on Wednesday morning, during which the head of state had the opportunity to learn about the functioning of the institution and learn about the programs promoted by the Aga Khan Development Network. According to him, it is an excellent education model that combines an international curriculum with a strong leadership training component.
“We are very impressed. The assessment we are making of this visit is extremely positive,” declared the president, highlighting the cultural diversity of the school community and the inclusion of students from different Mozambican provinces and countries such as Syria and South Africa, many of whom are beneficiaries of scholarships.
During the guided tour of the facilities – which include dormitories, a library, a cafeteria, a clinic and sports facilities – President Chapo praised the quality of the infrastructure and the living conditions provided to the students. He also highlighted the importance of bilingual education (Portuguese and English), particularly in a Commonwealth member country, classifying it as “strategic for the future of Mozambican education”.
Addressing the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of national independence, which will take place on 25 June, the statesman linked the role of education to the country’s development, stressing that institutions such as the Aga Khan Academy contribute to the training of leaders capable of transforming Mozambique.
“The Academy’s objective is to train leaders of the future,” he stated.
In addition to the education sector, the president highlighted the social role played by the Aga Khan Foundation in Mozambique, which currently develops projects in areas such as health, agriculture, nutrition, entrepreneurship, civil society and climate resilience in the provinces of Cabo Delgado, Nampula, Niassa and Maputo.
Chapo stressed the importance of private education as a strategic partner of the Government and advocated sharing experiences with the public sector. “We believe it is an experience worth replicating,” he said, concluding with the desire to deepen cooperation with the foundation to promote more development projects for the benefit of the country.
