Mozambican President Daniel Chapo on Friday inaugurated a Secondary School in Zintava neighbourhood, in Marracuene district, about 30 kilometres north of Maputo city.
The Zintava Secondary School, budgeted at 35 million meticais (548,000 US dollars, at the current exchange rate), was built with funds from the Marracuene Municipal Council.
The school, which has the capacity to accommodate around 1,000 students in morning and afternoon shifts, has 10 classrooms equipped with new desks. It was built using prefabricated materials, and the work was completed in just three months, with the aim of reducing the effort made by children of the local communities, who used to travel up to 14 kilometers to access secondary education.
During the inauguration ceremony, Chapo said that the school was the result of an innovative, faster and more economical construction model.
“At a lower cost, we were able to get the children into classrooms, with desks, in around 90 days. The school is aimed at responding to the challenges of overcrowded and precarious classrooms, which still exist in Maputo province”, he said.
According to Chapo, there is an urgent need to reduce the number of pupils per class, because this is one of the main barriers to good quality teaching.
“When we have too many children in the same room, the students cannot learn properly”, he said. “The building model adopted in Zintava must be replicated in other districts”.
With the new school coming into operation, Marracuene district now has five secondary schools, strengthening the coverage of post-primary education in the region.
