Mozambican President Daniel Chapo on Sunday called for national unity and for commitment by Mozambicans to the construction of economic independence.
He was speaking in Maputo’s Heroes Square, at a ceremony marking Victory Day – the 51st anniversary of the agreement, signed in Lusaka on 7 September 1974 between the liberation movement, Frelimo, and the Portuguese state, which ended the anti-colonial war, and fixed 25 June 1975 as the date for Mozambican independence.
Chapo said the Lusaka agreement “symbolises the victory of the Mozambican people and the courage of the heroes of liberation”.
The date was not just a public holiday, he said, but a date “to reflect upon the past and to inspire new generations. It is up to us to preserve national unity, peace, sovereignty and justice, while at the same time we advance towards economic independence”.
Chapo praised the contribution made by the veterans of the liberation struggle and announced government measures to benefit them – including the regularisation of their pensions, and the granting of scholarships to the children of veterans. He stressed the need to keep alive the memory of the struggle for independence.
Chapo also praised the young recruits in today’s defence and security forces, for their role in the fight against Islamist terrorism in the northern province of Cabo Delgado.
To conclude, he stressed what he regarded as “the central message of Victory Day” – namely that “political independence has been won, and now it is up to each Mozambican to work with determination and courage to ensure economic independence and a prosperous future for Mozambique”.
