Mozambican President Daniel Chapo has called for conscious and responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the country’s public universities.
According to Chapo, who was speaking on Wednesday, in Maputo, during a ceremony in which he swore into office vice-chancellors and deputy vice-chancellors of the country’s public universities, the responsible use of AI may be crucial for scientific productivity and improvement of the education system.
During the ceremony, the President swore into office Eusébio Macete as vice-chancellor of Lúrio University; Luís Cristóvão as vice-chancellor of Zambezi University; Mohsin Sidat as deputy vice-chancellor of Maputo’s Eduardo Mondlane University; and Alexandre Baía as deputy vice-chancellor of Zambezi University.
“The world is experiencing super-accelerated transformations. The digital revolution, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, the green economy, and climate change are redefining the ways we teach, learn, and produce knowledge”, Chapo said.
According to the President, it is up to universities to ensure that AI is used ethically, responsibly, “and competently for the benefit of society.”
He also warned that universities should not be left on the sidelines of technological change. Instead, “they should become a beacon that illuminates the path of innovation, a space where science is transformed into practical solutions to national challenges, especially for our local communities in the areas of agriculture, digital governance, public health, and intelligent management of natural resources.”
Chapo believes that public universities represent the nation’s critical conscience and the laboratory of ideas where national thought, technological innovation, and the hope of future generations are forged.
“Mozambique needs universities that train critical, creative, entrepreneurial, and ethical citizens who research, innovate, and serve the Mozambican people”, he said.
He challenged the heads of the universities to strengthen scientific research in the areas of health, environment, and marine sciences, “consolidating integration between teaching, research, and outreach, as well as pedagogical and technological modernization.”
“The universities must strengthen their academic quality and university management mechanisms, ensuring that each student finds in the university a space for transformative learning and personal growth”, he said.
