Mozambican President Daniel Chapo on Thursday met a delegation from the Christian Council of Mozambique (CCM), the umbrella body representing the mainstream protestant denominations, in order to discuss religious initiatives aimed at promoting peace and national unity.
Received in an audience granted by Chapo, the CCM presented a project named “Mozambique First”, which is aimed at strengthening the need for “peace and national unity and commitment of Mozambicans to the country’s development, placing national interests above any differences.”
According to Bishop Rodrigues Dambo, the chairperson of the CCM delegation, the project aims to awaken a sense of patriotism, and of individual and collective responsibility in order to inspire a continuous exercise of conscious citizenship.
“This initiative aims to bring all Mozambicans together, to unite us and look at Mozambique first, so that each one of us, the government, political parties or society as a whole can do something good for Mozambique. The central message of the proposal is the rejection of violence and valuing peace as an indispensable condition for progress”, he said.
Dambo said the President welcomed the initiative “and showed openness to the spirit of reconciliation and national cohesion.”
“It was a very positive meeting, the President welcomed the initiative and gave all necessary support. Mozambique needs to reconcile, needs to find itself again and needs us all to walk together,” he said.
The delegation also appreciated the meeting between President Chapo and the former presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, claiming that “dialogue between the parties represents a gesture of courage and great political significance”
“The meeting was an act of courage, and this really contributes to the reconciliation of Mozambicans”, Dambo added.
