Drivers of semi-collective passenger transport (“chapas”) staged a protest action on Maputo Ring Road yesterday against the unlicensed use of private vehicles for public transport.
Transporters on the routes between Intaka, Muhalaze, Matola-Gare and Mathemele neighbourhoods and destinations in the cities of Maputo and Matola blocked the road using stones, tree trunks and other devices in protest at what they consider unfair competition.
Chapa driver Victor Manhiça cites the unlicensed Toyota ‘Sienta’ vehicles taking passengers to various destinations in the capital from the first roundabout in Intaka.
Another driver, Marcos Vilanculos, alleges that Traffic Police (PT) agents working the corridor have been charging the “chapeiros” illegal levies, making it difficult to achieve the revenue target required by vehicle owners.
Passenger Marta Tchambule said she was giving up trying to get to work, because of the stoppage.
Transit Police officer Nórdica Mapossa, who met the protesters, advised them to organize themselves as a group to forward their concerns to the competent authorities, who would subsequently identify a way to put an end to any illicit charges, as well as the transport of passengers in private vehicles.
