Cesaltina Lorenzoni, head of Mozambique’s National Cancer Control Program at the Ministry of Health (MISAU) and Scientific and Pedagogical Director at Maputo Central Hospital (HCM), has been elected president of the African Organization for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC).
The election took place between the 2nd and 6th of last November in Dakar, the capital of Senegal, during the 14th AORTIC International Conference on Cancer in Africa.
“In her team, the new AORTIC president will have the following elements: vice-president for North Africa, Dr. Nahla Gafer (Morocco); vice-president for East Africa, Dr. Sitna Mwanzi (Kenya); vice-president for Africa Western, Dr. Olusegun Alatise, (Nigeria); Vice President for Central Africa, Dr. Calvin Ngalla (Cameroon); Vice President for North America, Dr. Abiola Ibraheem (North America); and Vice President for Europe, Dr. Julie Torede (England),” a statement from the Ministry of Health (MISAU) explains.
Cesaltina Lorenzoni represented the Portuguese Speaking African Countries (PALOP) at AORTIC from 2020-2021 and, until her election, held the position of president of the Education and Training Committee in the same organization.
“Mozambique, through MISAU, has been collaborating with this organization since 2011. Mozambique has stood out in leading several committees and in active participation in cancer training and research, within the country, in the PALOP and in the world in general,” the MISAU note reads.
The success of the 12th AORTIC Conference in Maputo in 2019 provided yet more testimony to the involvement and engagement of MISAU and the country in the fight against cancer.
The involvement of First Lady Isaura Nyusi in the conference and in activities related to preventing and combating cancer contributed, greatly enhanced the country’s prominence.
MISAU also notes that the support of the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, in actions aimed at combating cancer, reinforces confidence and the need to place the country at the forefront of eliminating this evil.
This is the first time that a Portuguese-speaking country has assumed the presidency of this organization since its creation in 1982.
AORTIC is a pan-African, multidisciplinary cancer research and training organization, founded in 1982, dedicated to promoting cancer control and treatment in Africa. Over the past 10 years, the organization has seen an increase in its members and activities.
The Biennial Conference was attended by 1,040 participants from all over the world, including scientists, doctors, nurses, partners and pharmaceutical industry representatives.
