Fitch cuts global growth outlook as trade war escalates
The Fourth General Census of Population and Housing, which will by August 15 cover close to five million households and register more than 27 million people, starts tomorrow.
In a message to the nation yesterday President Nyusi urged all Mozambican citizens and foreigners residing in the country to cooperate with census teams, noting that the census would enable the government to design public policies more in line with reality and the needs of the population.
“Therefore, we would like to reiterate our appeal to all residents, regardless of their nationality, religion and ideological orientation, to cooperate with National Statistics Institute census staff and instruct residents and occupants of homes to be available for the correct filling-in of the census forms”, the president’s message reads.
During the 15 days, the number of inhabitants of Mozambique and their characteristics (age, marital status, language, profession, education) and the type of housing they occupy will be determined.
“The 2007 census identified 20.8 million people. By 2017, according to our projections, the country’s population will have grown to about 27.1 million,” National Statistics Institute spokesman Cirilo Tembe says.
According to Tembe, in order for all households to be counted, census-takers will communicate when they will visit, so that the household is prepared. If the family is unavailable, it can arrange another date with the enumerator, like a weekend, as long as it is within the census period.
In addition to residents in traditional housing. the operation will cover people living in homes, residential centres, barracks and other such places, as well as migrants.
Including census takers, supervisors, guides, drivers and support staff, 196,000 people have been mobilized for census work. There are 131 4WD vehicles, 750 motorcycles and 10,000 bicycles supporting the operation, to be used exclusively for the collection of 2017 census data.
Data will be collected in about 70,000 enumeration areas throughout the country. These are small areas delimited to facilitate the location of households and the working area of the enumerators.
