The final results of the fourth general population and housing census, carried out in August of last year in Mozambique, will be published in October of this year and not in June, President of the National Statistics Institute Rosário Fernandes said yesterday in Maputo.
“The procedural, administrative and financial delays, as well as those resulting from multi-level audits, do not realistically allow for the publication of results in June this year, as originally planned,” he explained.
After the publication of the preliminary results, thematic data will also be made public, “in the period from 1 November to 30 April 2019, but in a phased manner, complementary to that of the last general census”.
Fernandes said that “the rate of omission to be ascertained should be accurate and authentic, allowing it to be better fitted into the criteria of good international practice for statistical census practice”.
Preliminary figures indicate that Mozambique has 28.8 million inhabitants, of which 15.06 million are women and 13.8 million are men. The province of Nampula is the most populous.
According to the preliminary results, there are currently 6.5 million homes and 6.7 million households.
