Cervejas de Moçambique (CDM) has provided US$1 million “to guarantee the continuity” of the Moçambola in 2025, the country’s main football championship, the presidency has announced.
The presidency statement informs that the “immediate support” was confirmed on Friday by Cervejas de Moçambique’s directors in a meeting with Daniel Chapo, responding to “a special appeal” from the president, “motivated by concerns about the safety, viability, and future of the country’s premier football competition”.
“CDM’s support will be channelled, in large part, toward paying for airfare for the teams participating in the Moçambola, a measure coordinated directly between the company and the national airline, Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique (LAM). The measure aims to reduce the long and exhausting overland journeys often undertaken by sports delegations,” the presidency statement reads.

The 2025 Moçambola, involving 14 teams, has suffered several setbacks, having started on May 17th instead of March 26th as planned, followed by a two-week suspension on July 10th due to LAM’s unwillingness to provide air transportation for the teams due to non-payment by the clubs, citing 100 million meticais (€1.3 million) in debts since 2024.
On August 1st, a serious traffic accident occurred involving the bus carrying the Associação Desportiva de Vilankulo (ADV) team, which was returning home from a Moçambola match. ADV’s matches are being postponed by decision of the Mozambican Football League, despite only seven rounds of the 2025 national championship having been played so far.
“The head of state’s appeal also arises from concerns about the safety of sports delegations, as prolonged road trips have caused fatigue and caused traffic accidents. A recent example was the accident involving the ADV’s main team, which resulted in the death of a member of the delegation and the injuries of several others,” the presidency recalled in the same statement.

The presidency’s statement adds that Daniel Chapo emphasized that this intervention is part of “a broader effort to revitalize and revitalize Moçambola, recognizing its strategic role in promoting national unity, youth development, and the affirmation of Mozambican sport domestically and internationally”.
“In the coming days, a broad reflection will be held with all stakeholders, including the government, the private sector, the Mozambican Football Federation (FMF), clubs, and other partners, to identify structural and lasting solutions that ensure the stability and sustainable growth of Moçambola,” the statement also reads.
It also states that, “with this support, the government and its partners hope to create conditions for the Moçambola to take place with greater safety, competitiveness, and regularity, strengthening the championship’s image and expanding opportunities for athletes, clubs, and fans throughout the country”.
