Mozambican civil society organisation, the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD,) on Wednesday launched a training programme for young leaders in ruby-rich Montepuez district, Cabo Delgado province, northern Mozambique.
The CDD says that the “Strengthening Transformational Leadership and Agency Development (LEAD)” programme will give young people leadership skills so that they can participate actively in governance in Montepuez district and Cabo Delgado province.
“LEAD will influence, motivate and equip young people to believe in their individual and collective innovative power so that they cease to be mere job-seekers and become catalysts for inclusive development and change,” the note adds.
The initiative includes three-month online training courses in leadership and entrepreneurship in areas such as agriculture, communication and information technologies and services.
The programme is being implemented in partnership with the Mozambican government through the Agency for Integrated Development of the North (ADIN), Montepuez Ruby Mining, the concessionaire of the largest ruby reserves in Mozambique, and multinationals involved in natural gas projects in Cabo Delgado province.
Unemployment and the marginalisation of young people in Cabo Delgado have been suggested in several studies as favouring the recruitment of young people by armed groups operating in the province since 2017.
According to the United Nations, armed violence in Cabo Delgado Cabo Delgado has forced 250,000 people to flee from districts affected by insecurity in the north of the province. The conflict has already killed at least 1,000 people, with some of the armed actions have been claimed by the Islamic State (IS) jihadist group.
