The chemistry laboratory at the Catholic University of Mozambique (UCM) in Beira has started producing medicinal syrups using plants with expectorant properties.
Munhale Pompílio, the technician responsible for the Chemistry, Physics and Biology laboratories of that university, told ‘Noticias’ that the aim was, in th first instance, to help local communities.
Pompílio said that the syrups helped combat various diseases by regulating the nervous system and metabolism, thereby mitigating the internal instability of the human organism.
The initiative is part of the “Green Medicine” project, begun in 2004 when the UCM promoted health lectures explaining how some diseases that can be treated in sufferers’ own homes.
According to Munhale Pompilio, the medicine are made with dried Eucalyptus leaves, Aloe vera, honeycombs and so on, plus a small amount of sugar and “whiskey” to facilitate composition.
Then, the product is labelled with its date and place of manufacture and expiry date.
Regarding efficacy, Pompilio explained that the pharmaceutical preparation depends a lot on the principle of the first product to enter the composition of the syrup, which, in this case, is the first to expire.
He also revealed that UCM has a project for the production of preparations for the treatment of filarial and skin pigmentation, among other complaints, which it expects to roll out at the end of this year.
