Cashew nut exports are now officially open, following the approval of reference prices for this 2024-2025 campaign, ranging from US$1,339.00 per ton for “44 lbs out-turn” quality to US$1,613.00 for “53 lbs out-turn”.
According to the Institute of Nuts (IAM), the decision was made a few days ago in the city of Maputo, during the 2nd Session of the Almond Committee, chaired by its director-general, Ilídio Bande.
According to the report by the Bank of Mozambique (BdM), cashew nut exports recorded a year-on-year decrease of 32.6% in the first quarter of 2024, to 2.1 billion meticais.
The shortfall is mainly due to unfavourable weather conditions, namely cyclones and heavy rains in Gaza, Inhambane, Manica and Sofala provinces during in December 2023 and March 2024.
Analysis of the data reveals the variability of cashew export figures. In the first quarter of 2022, exports reached a value of approximately 2.5 billion meticais, but this increased to 3.4 billion meticais for the same period in 2023.
The main destinations for Mozambique’s cashew nuts are India, Vietnam, the United States, the Netherlands and China.
The reference price to the producer for the sale of raw cashew nuts in the current campaign is 45.00 meticais per kilogram, 10 meticais more than in the last harvest. Production of approximately 160,000 tonnes is expected this season.
