The Nampula Provincial Office to Combat Corruption (GCC), in the north of Mozambique, has opened an investigation into a corruption complaint against Paulo Vahanle, the mayor of the provincial capital, an official source told Lusa today.
“We received a complaint of corruption against the president of Nampula city council and started an investigation,” cabinet spokesman José Sopa told Lusa, adding that other members of the municipal council referred to in the complaint were also investigated.
“There is now an audit of the municipality’s accounts so that the investigation can proceed, because this is still in the beginning,” he added, without giving further details of the investigation, referring other details to the outcome.
Lusa tried unsuccessfully to get a reaction from the mayor of Nampula.
Paulo Vahanle publicly denounced alleged cases of corruption involving municipality officials in June.
The mayor of Nampula was elected by the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), Mozambique’s main opposition party, and has held the position for more than two years.
Renamo is currently at the helm of eight of the country’s 53 municipalities; one is led by the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM) and the remaining 44 by the Mozambican Liberation Front (Frelimo), the party in power.
Vahanle rose to office in April 2018 after winning the March mid-term election that year, following the October 2017 murder of his predecessor Mahamudo Amurane (MDM).
Vahanle won again for a five-year term in the country-wide October 2018 local elections.
