Judge Carlos Mondlane was unanimously elected and acclaimed head of the International Union of Portuguese Language Judges (UIJLP) for three years. The body has not had an African president since its inception in 2010.
According to the newspaper O País, the body, whose main objective is to promote an independent judiciary in the Lusophone world, is made up of the associations of judges from Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tome and Prince and East Timor.
O País notes that Mondlane’s election breaks the alternating presidency of Brazil and Portugal, and brings to the African continent the attention of the judiciary in Portuguese-speaking countries.
“We are to be congratulated, we the Mozambican judges, for showing that we are capable of meeting the best in the world. Of course, I am pleased. As well as being a source of pride, it is also a recognition, not only of Mozambique, but of the continent in general,” O País quotes Mondlane as saying.
The election of Judge Carlos Mondlane as president of UIJLP took place in Bissau, the Guinean capital, on Friday.
