The Mozambican government plans to introduce cargo drones for humanitarian assistance to people affected by natural disasters, announced deputy director of the National Emergency Operating Centre (Cenoe), António Beleza on Wednesday.
“It is a complex project, but it is already in the pipeline and with funding available, through WFP [World Food Programme] and the European Union,” said Beleza, speaking to journalists in the city of Beira.
In the first phase, the project will train 25 cargo drone pilots and their licensing at the Mozambican Communications Institute (INCM).
“We still don’t have pilots trained to fly these devices in the country. What we are doing now is actually training and we will need 25 with international aviation licenses and certified by INCM,” he said.
With guaranteed funding from the European Union (EU), they will be able to reach areas at risk of natural disasters.
Mozambique is one of the most vulnerable countries to the impact of climate change in the world.
In the last three years, five tropical cyclones (Desmond, Idai, Kenneth, Chalane, Eloise and Guambe) have caused damage, mainly in the central provinces of the country.
