Improving care in hospitals and health units could be the best cure for patients seeking health unit services, Minister of Health Ussene Isse acknowledged yesterday in Maputo.
Minister Isse, who was speaking in the Chamanculo neighbourhood, Lhamankulo municipal district, at the first public consultation on the functioning of health units, pledged that the government was working to restore dignity to health unit users.
He noted that delays in care were one of the main concerns of users, which is why internal work was underway with technicians in the sector to reverse the situation.
In parallel, the theft of medicines and medical-surgical equipment in health units must be combated as quickly as possible, as it was, in his opinion, an evil that undermines the National Health System, and to this end, communities must report such practices. The minister said that local medicine reception committees in hospitals must be part of the control system.
Meanwhile, the lack of toilets in some health units is being resolved through the implementation of improvement works.
Minister Isse also announced that the construction of more wards was underway with a view to expanding services in health units.
In general, the minister stressed, the great challenge for the health sector was to humanize services, so that patients felt good and recovered quickly from their illnesses.
He called on communities to report poor service, including illegal charges perpetrated by some employees.
Joana Tembe, from KaTembe asked the minister to intervene because health units in her district provided poor service and lacked toilets for users.
In turn, Dolores Mandlate, from the Magoanine ‘B’ neighbourhood, complained about the lack of confidentiality on the part of some health professionals, especially in relation to patients undergoing antiretroviral treatment.
