Mozambique has announced the provisional squad to play Uganda and Botswana in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers this September.
Mozambique national football team coach Chiquinho Conde called up 25 players for the matches against Uganda and Botswana in September, for the seventh and eighth rounds of Group G of the World Cup qualifiers, with captain Dominguez absent.
The players, announced on Thursday at a press conference, will face Uganda on September 5 at the Mandela National Stadium in Kampala and, two days later, play against Botswana on September 8 at the Zimpeto National Stadium in Maputo, a stadium recently approved by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to host international competitions.
Among the players who will be part of the Mambas squad for the World Cup qualifiers, Sporting’s Geny Catamo stands out.
Other players called up who play in Portugal include Kimiss Zavala (Marítimo FC), Diogo Calila (Santa Clara), Keyns Abdala (GD Chaves), Pedro Santos (Caldas), and Witiness Quembo (Nacional da Madeira).
For both matches, Chiquinho Conde said the national team has “more than enough conditions” to achieve “something fantastic.”
Mambas captain Dominguez, who currently plays for União Desportiva de Songo, was once again left out of the squad, with Chiquinho Conde explaining that he “expressed no desire” to join the national team after missing the last two matches due to not submitting his documentation on time.
“He didn’t call me, he didn’t call any of my staff, he didn’t call the federation’s structure, he didn’t speak to the captains’ group about his absence, and as such, it’s unclear whether he wants to continue with the national team or not. So I assume that this lack of respect as a captain, as a leader, doesn’t contribute much to the well-being of a team,” said the Mozambican coach, warning that no one is above the Mozambican Football Federation.
“It’s with great regret, I wouldn’t want to be linked to Dominguez’s departure, but we have a principle and we have to be consistent. (…) Besides the player he is, we have to first consider the man, and as such, no one is above the institution. (…) I don’t see any chance of him returning to this national team group,” Conde concluded.
The Mozambican national football team will once again host matches at the Zimpeto National Stadium, after CAF authorized the stadium on August 4th to host daytime matches only and with a maximum capacity of 15,000 spectators.
Mozambique has 12 points in Group G of the World Cup qualifying tournament, occupying second place in the group, which is led by Algeria with 15 points. Botswana is in third place with 9 points, followed by Uganda with the same number of points, Guinea Conakry with 7, and Somalia in last place with 1 point.
The winner of each of the nine groups will qualify directly for the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11th to July 19th, while the four best runners-up will compete in a play-off to determine the 10th team to qualify.
