The Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Thursday challenged tourism operators to develop daring innovative solutions to explore the country’s full tourism potential, thanks to a more favourable environment promoted by the government.
Nyusi launched the challenge during the opening ceremony of the VIII International Tourism Fair (FIKANI), a 3-day event taking place under the theme “Tourism as a Factor of Economic Revitalisation”.
“We expect tourism operators in Mozambique to strive to further reposition the country on the international reference tourism map which would contribute for the sector to achieve a double-digit growth rate in the Gross Domestic Product structure”, he said.
Tourism operators are also challenged to reach the target of 10 million international arrivals by 2024, as a result of the relaxation of visa requirements and the simplification of bureaucratic procedures, among other initiatives.
“In 2018, Mozambique received 2.8 million tourists up from 1.5 million in the previous year, as a reflection of the introduction of the border visa. We equally challenge our operators to reach 10 million international arrivals by 2024, with the opening measures and simplification of bureaucratic procedures in our country ” he noted.
According to Nyusi, international arrivals in Mozambique are approaching 70 percent of 2019 levels, so much so that in the first quarter of 2022 the country reported 149,000 international visitors, compared to 93,000 in the same period of 2021.
Vilankulo district, in Inhambane province, stands out as a major destination for international tourism. The same trend is seen on the number of jobs where 67,000 were recorded in the same period up from 64,000 in 2019.

Nyusi believes that these are realistic targets, but to achieve tourism operators are required to improve the quality of services provided to the customers through permanent training and capacity building for professionals working in this sector.
″Ongoing training and capacity building of tourism professionals to improve the quality of services provided to tourists should continue to be a priority for all those involved in the tourism chain. This command requires investing in the training of professionals with the standards required to provide better quality services,” he recommended.
