Mozambican poet, writer and journalist, Raul Alves Calane da Silva, died this afternoon in Maputo, at the age of 75,
About a week ago, Calane da Silva was admitted to the General Hospital of Polana Caniço.
Writer and essayist, Calane da Silva was born on October 20, 1945, in Lourenço Marques, currently Maputo.
Who doesn’t know and haven’t read “Xicandarinha na Lenha do Mundo”?
Calane coordinated Gazeta Artes e Letras of Tempo magazine in 1985.
He was one of the co-founders of the Mozambican Writers Association (AEMO), where he was assistant secretary in 1987.
As a journalist, Calane da Silva was an editor of the Televisão Experimental de Moçambique, in 1987.
In addition to teaching at the Language Centre at the Pedagogical University in Maputo, Calane was a researcher in Mozambican literature.
The poet and essayist also served as director of the Centro Cultural Brasil-Moçambique, in Maputo.
Calane was awarded the “José Craveirinha Award”, on November 22, 2011. This is the biggest Mozambican literary award, which distinguished his career in literature and in essay.
The university professor also won the literary contest “Prémio 10 de Novembro”, jointly organised by the Municipal Council of the City of Maputo and the Mozambican Writers Association, on the anniversary of the capital of the country.
