On May 21st, the Cahora Bassa Hydroelectric Company will hold an international conference to commemorate its 50th anniversary. The conference will address, among other topics, dam management in the context of climate change.
The event is part of the ceremonies celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Cahora Bassa Hydroelectric Plant, which will continue until the end of the year. The high point of the celebrations will be on June 23rd, the company’s anniversary, but before that, an international conference is scheduled for May 21st, which will address, among other topics, dam management in the context of climate change.
Mariano Quinze, Communications Director at HCB, explained : “The panel will be composed of individuals with great influence on the subjects, and some topics have been listed here, namely a first panel that aims to discuss the role of power plants in the development of the region’s economies, we will have a second panel which is the panel on the management of hydroelectric plants in the context of climate change that generates extreme events, now here we are talking about floods and droughts and particularly now we are talking about droughts, in this panel we intend to discuss how hydroelectric plants in this context of droughts are managing their dams, how they are adapting to climate change.”.
Under the motto “HCB: Yesterday, Today and the Future, a Structuring and Strategic Company”, the Cahora Bassa Hydroelectric Plant wants to involve entities from the southern region of Africa and beyond in the discussion and search for solutions to the current challenges of the sector.
“We expect that in addition to the companies participating in this panel, we will have a number of guests here, namely companies from the national and regional energy sector that will be present, those that are part of SAPP, which is the Southern Africa Pool, which is the region’s energy pool. We will also have academics, politicians, opinion makers, enthusiasts of the national and regional energy sector. We believe that with this conference we can make our contribution to the dissemination of information about how these companies in the energy sector operate in the region,” Quinze said.
The two-day event is expected to attract over 300 participants and will take place in the city of Maputo.
The HCB jubilee celebrations will continue until the end of the year, with sports activities and the development of social responsibility projects scheduled in all regions of the country.
