Veteran of the national liberation struggle Cadmiel Muthemba died in Maputo on Saturday after a long illness.
His death was confirmed in ‘Notícias’ yesterday by his brother, Octávio Muthemba, who indicated that Cadmiel Muthemba had been suffering from an unspecified disease for four years, and that his clinical condition had worsened in the first quarter of last year.
He was admitted to Maputo Private Hospital two weeks ago, and passed away on Saturday, at the age of 76. The funeral will take place tomorrow, Tuesday, at his birthplace in Chicumbane, Xai-Xai city, Gaza province.
According to his family, Cadmiel Muthemba was born in Chicumbane on November 21, 1945, but the first (May 1991) edition of the Public Information Bureau’s ‘Who’s Who in Mozambique’ gives his date of birth as July 20, 1945.
A senior Frelimo member, Cadmiel Muthemba was a fighter in the clandestine national liberation struggle. After the proclamation of national independence, he held various positions such as provincial governor of Tete, minister of Fisheries and minister of Public Works and Housing. He also held several Frelimo party positions, notably that of secretary of the Central Committee for Training and Staff.
Cadmiel Muthemba joined Frelimo in 1964. A militant in the underground, he was arrested by the political police PIDE in the city of Xai-Xai, in Gaza in 1965, and incarcerated until 1972. Muthemba joined the Association of National Liberation Struggle Combatants (ACLLN) in 1988, when the organization was created.
