Gunmen shot a businessman in downtown Maputo on Tuesday night who later died, Mozambique’s police announced on Wednesday.
Amit Samgi, 40, was accosted while closing his business premises on Avenida Alberto Luthuli, according to police.
“He was intercepted by two individuals: a shooter came down from a vehicle, a light van,” shooting the businessman three times, said Leonel Muchina, a spokesman for the PRM police force.
The victim was taken to Maputo Central Hospital, where he was declared dead.
The case is in the hands of the National Criminal Investigation Service (Sernic), Muchina said, adding that there were “several clues” and “reconstituted scenarios” being used with a view to finding the perpetrator.
Carta de Moçambqiue reports that the victim was a Mozambican citizen of Indian origin, Miramar reports that he was called Amit Jai Ambe and owned Mercearia Estrela, which in turn had as it registered manager Amit Samgi.
According to eyewitnesses cited by Miramar TV, the killers ha been waiting across the street inside a double cabin white vehicle. As the victim was leaving, accompanied by his brother, the criminals reportedly drove by, opened the car window and shot to kill, adds the same source.

The killing is the latest in a series of crimes committed against businesspeople so far this year in Mozambique.
In July, the president of Confederation of Mozambique Economic Associations (CTA), Agostinho Vuma, was shot and wounded as he left his office in downtown Maputo, in a case that has yet to be cleared up.
Since the beginning of the year, the authorities have recorded a total of nine kidnappings, with the victims all businessmen or their families. Two have been rescued by the authorities and two others released under conditions that are as yet unclear.
