Family and friends of Juma Wazir, a businessman from Mocimboa da Praia district in northern Cabo Delgado province, have not had any information about his whereabouts for two weeks.
A source told Carta de Moçambique that the businessman had been kidnapped by persons unknown from Balama district, where he was pursuing business activities, after leaving Mocimboa da Praia as a consequence of terrorist attacks.
Witnesses claim that the businessman was abducted during the day by a group of individuals in a Toyota Fortuner.
The Carta sources cannot confirm whether Wazir’s abduction has anything to do with either terrorism or the kidnapping industry, nor whether the kidnappers are Mozambicans or residents of the district of Balama.
What they do know is that, three days before his abduction, the victim was in the city of Pemba, and there withdrew an unspecified amount of money.
It is common knowledge that, since the beginning of the terrorist attacks, several businessmen from the districts affected have been kidnapped, some by the terrorist groups themselves, and others allegedly by Defence and Security Forces (FDS), on suspicion of collaborating with the terrorists.
