A Nhancale company passenger bus on its way from Maputo city to Mambone in Inhambane province caught fire early on Tuesday afternoon in the Incaia area of Bilene district, Gaza province.
The 30 passengers travelling to different parts of Inhambane province were unharmed, but suffered substantial material damage.
The vehicle, passengers’ luggage and other cargo, including Tuesday editions of the Notícias newspaper, were all destroyed.
Driver Manuel Chilundo says he noticed smoke coming from the engine, and immediately stopped the vehicle in an attempt to avoid the worst, but he would nevertheless soon see the ‘machimbombo’ reduced to ashes.
“I noticed smoke coming from the engine, and when we went down to see what was going on we found flames too. We got the fire extinguisher and had help from the population, but it was impossible to save anything,” he related.
District commander of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique in Bilene, Benjamim Mabuango, said that the corporation became aware of the incident too late to do anything to help secure passengers’ belongings.
Although information about the incident is scarce, there is a chance that it was caused by a malfunction in the vehicle’s electrical system.
Firefighters did attend the scene but took no action, the damage being already done.
