Mozambique: Bus attack in Mavago, Niassa – driver killed, money and cell phones stolen

Mavago District is a district of Niassa Province in north-western Mozambique. The main town is Mavago. The district lies along the border with Tanzania. Area: 9,112 km², estimated population around 17,046 .

A group of unidentified armed men attacked a semi-collective passenger transport vehicle in Mavago district, Niassa province, in the early hours of Friday [October 2], Rádio Moçambique reports.

The driver of the vehicle was killed and the criminals seized more than 85,000 meticais and six cell phones from the passengers.

The event occurred in the so-called ‘Makuas’ climb’ [Subida dos Macuas], 40 kilometres from the town of , the district capital.

The head of the Public Relations department in acting at the PRM Command in Niassa, Alfredo Cuane, confirmed the occurrence and says that the corporation is hunting down the criminals to bring them to justice.

Um grupo de homens armadas desconhecidos atacou, na madrugada de ontem, um transporte semicolectivo de passageiros no distrito de Mavago, no Niassa.

Do ataque, resultou na morte do motorista da viatura e os malfeitores se apoderaram de mais de 85 mil meticais e 6 telemóveis dos ocupantes.

O facto ocorreu na chamada subida dos Makuas, a 40 quilómetros da sede distrito de Mavago.

O substituto do chefe do departamento de Relações Públicas no Comando da PRM no Niassa, Alfredo Cuane, confirmou a ocorrência e diz que a corporação está ao encalço dos malfeitores para a sua responsabilização.
