The Mozambican police set up a security perimeter on Joaquim Chissano Avenue in Maputo, where there are burning tires, in a protest that follows the announcement of the results of the October 9 elections, with gunshots being heard in the area.
The National Elections Commission (CNE) today announced the results of the general vote count for the October 9 elections – presidential, legislative and provincial assembly -, which give victory to the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo, in power), with 11 more deputies than it already had in parliament, and to its presidential candidate, Daniel Chapo, with 70.67% of the votes, results that still need to be validated by the Constitutional Council.
Venâncio Mondlane, supported by the Optimist Party for the Development of Mozambique (Podemos, which until now was an extra-parliamentary party), and who came in second place with 20.32% of the votes, had called for two days of general strikes and demonstrations across the country today and Friday in protest against the way the electoral process was conducted.
Lusa ascertained on site today that several shots were fired in the neighbourhoods near Avenida Joaquim Chissano, as well as tear gas, and that a helicopter was hovering above the area.
