The land connection between the provinces of Nampula and Niassa was restored yesterday (24-10) when motorists were again able to transport goods and people safely over the Natete river, thanks to the intervention of various sectors in the region.
This takes place only four days after Minister of Public Works Carlos Mesquita pledged that the Natete bridge would reopen soon.
Minister Mesquita said the non-observance of the weight limits by transporters constituted the biggest challenge for the preservation of road infrastructure, citing this as the reason for the collapse of the metal bridge over the Natete river on Estrada Nacional Number 13 in Ribáue district, Nampula province.
The original concrete bridge over the Natete collapsed in the rainy season of 2021, the National Roads Administration then placing a temporary metal structure on top of it to ensure provisional transitability.
