The road connection between Nacala-a-Velha and Memba districts in Nampula province has been interrupted by the collapse, during heavy rain on Tuesday night, of a bridge over the Chupite river in the 7 de Abril locality.
Memba district government technicians are on the ground and have already created an alternative route via the Namahaca intersection, on National Road Number 1 (EN1) in Nacaroa, emerging at the Nihola intersection.
Memba Permanent Secretary Rosalina Amisse says that signage has been erected on-site while the relevant road contractors are mobilised.
Head of Works in the District Planning and Infrastructure Service, Estevão Saíde, said that this was the second time the bridge had collapsed, and appealed for the utmost attention to be paid to signage in order to avoid further accidents.
