Road connection between the Cahora Bassa and Mágoè districts via Regional Road Number 601 in Tete province has been interrupted since Friday due to the collapse of the bridge over the Daque river, approximately 75 kilometres from the main town of the two districts, ‘O Pais’ reports.
Local authorities say the bridge deck collapsed following the heavy rains that have been falling since last week.
The road was still cut on early Saturday afternoon, but the district infrastructure director promised that a team would be created to work on opening an alternative route while work was underway to replace the damaged bridge.
The same source also reported that heavy rains had destroyed houses, leaving at least five families without shelter. The Cahora Bassa district government says that the affected families are already receiving support.
