Bakeries put up the price of bread on Monday because of rising production costs, the president of the Mozambican Association of Breadmakers (AMOPÃO) told Lusa yesterday.
“It makes perfect sense for bakeries to increase the price of bread, which has not been adjusted since 2017,” Víctor Miguel said.
Bakers and bakeries met to discuss the increases last week and again this week. According to the AMOPÃO president, points of sale are increasing the price of bread according to their own costs, and there is no agreed across-the-board price rise.
Victor Miguel cited increases in the cost of wheat, water and electricity as contributory factors. “Either we adjust the price, or bakeries are in an untenable situation,” he said.
Víctor Miguel added that more than 70 bakeries have closed in recent months across the country because they were unable to meet production costs.
Consumers tell Lusa that the most popular type of bread in Mozambican cities has gone up 2.5 meticais (about three Euro cents) this week, now costing 12.5 meticais (€0.15).
