Brazilian vice president, Hamilton Mourão, on Friday said Brazil is available to collaborate with Mozambique if Maputo requests military support to combat Islamic terrorism in the province of Cabo Delgado.
“If there is some kind of intervention by a multilateral body, whether the United Nations or even the African Union and if Brazil’s participation is requested, we will study and look into it,” he said in an interview with Lusa, on the sidelines of the 13th Conference of Heads of State and Government of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), held in Luanda.
“We will not shirk our responsibilities,” the Brazilian vice president added.
“Brazil, in the 1990s already participated in a peace force in Mozambique,” as part of peace negotiations, with General Lélio Gonçalves Rodrigues da Silva leading the blue helmets mission.
“We had a participation in terms of troops that was not so expressive, it was an infantry company”, Hamilton Mourão said.
Armed groups have terrorised Cabo Delgado province since 2017, with some attacks claimed by the Islamic State group. There are more than 2,800 deaths, according to the ACLED conflict registration project, and 732,000 displaced people, according to the United Nations.
