The Botswana government has stressed its support in the fight against terrorism that has been plaguing parts of the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado since October 2017.
The commitment was expressed by the Deputy President of Botswana, Slumber Tsogwane, at a press conference, minutes after an audience granted by Mozambican President, Filipe Nyusi.
“We wish success in the fight against terrorism and we also express our support as members of SADC (Southern African Development Community)”, stated Tsogwane, adding he is also visiting Mozambique to provide moral support to the soldiers from his country, as they are part of the SADC Military Mission (SAMIM).
“We want to boost the morale of our soldiers”, he said. “That is why we are here in Maputo in transit to Pemba [the Cabo Delgado provincial capital]. We are going there to get informed and gather first-hand information. We are also waiting to receive a report on the latest developments.”
Mozambique and Botswana, Tsogwane said, share common interests in many areas, such as natural gas, construction of a railway line between the two countries, as well as the transmission of electricity.
“In this case, the problem of terrorism in Cabo Delgado is also of great concern to Botswana”, he said, highlighting the excellent relations between the Botswana military contingent and the local population in Cabo Delgado.
The president of the National Assembly of Botswana, Phandu Tombola Skelemani, also received by Nyusi, told reporters “if there is no peace in Mozambique, there will not be peace in Botswana either”
