The Deputy Commander, Botswana Defence Force, Major General Mpho Churchill Mophuting visited the SADC Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM) forces deployed in the Cabo Delgado Province on a 4-day official visit from 22 – 25 August 2022.
During his visit, he paid a courtesy call to the Acting Force Commander, Brigadier Simon Motswana Barwabatsile at the SAMIM Force Headquarters in Pemba. He was further taken into a detailed comprehensive briefing on the current security situation in the Cabo Delgado Province, successes made as well as challenges encountered in the mission area.
On his part, Major General Mophuting expressed his appreciation on the impressive work done by SAMIM in assisting Forças Armadas de Defesa de Moçambique (FADM) on behalf of the Republic of Mozambique and by extension, the entire continent of Southern Africa. He reminded the forces that if terrorism is not contained, it has the potential to spill over to other parts of the region. “It is vital that you work together in the fight against terrorism to avoid the spreading of terrorists to other nations”, he said. He has encouraged the forces in theatre to do their best in demolishing out terrorism in Cabo Delgado Province. Representing your countries with diligence is commendable and taken to greater heights, he stressed.
However, he expressed gratitude for SAMIM forces to have degraded and humiliated the terrorists in the course of assisting FADM to bring the security situation in Cabo Delgado to normalcy. He further called for Personnel Contributing Countries to assist the mission by responding not only to personnel needs but critical equipment that will afford SAMIM mission accomplishment.
According to the General, “we need to give our soldiers confidence by providing them with the right equipment.”
Mophuting and his entourage further took a guided tour to the contingents deployed in Pemba, SAMIM Level II hospital before being taken to Mueda District where Botswana Forces are deployed. When addressing at South African National Defence Force, United Republic of Tanzania and Botswana Contingents, Deputy Commander, Botswana Defence Force encouraged the soldiers to carry on the good work and further appreciated their commitment and dedication in the effort to fight terrorism, he concluded.
During his stay here in Pemba, Major General Mophuting had time to tour the outreach project embarked by Botswana Contingent based in Pemba of maintaining a Community School which is on their finishing touches.
SAMIM would like to assure the people of Mozambique and SADC of a collective commitment to achieving a peaceful, stable and secure Cabo Delgado as well as the entire country of Mozambique.
